UNGA Side Event to Spotlight LGBTQ+ Rights in Africa, US and Globally
Civil Society Call to Action Directed at UN, UNGA attendees
African Services Committee and Outright International would like to extend you an invitation to join their upcoming UNGA 78 Side Event on the topic of “Accelerating Civil Society Responses to LGBTQ Human Rights in Africa, the US and Globally.” This event is Monday, September 18th from 10 am to 12 noon at a venue not far from the United Nations.
This event is organized with input from Convening for Equality Uganda, Convening for Global Equality, Rainbow Railroad, Human Rights Campaign, Global Fund Advocates Network Africa, Health GAP and COC Netherlands.
We are convening Civil Society Organizations and activists with UNGA delegates to hear field updates on the status and impact of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania, and Kenya, as well as the United States. We will discuss needed strategic responses needed by the UN, Member States, other governments, and civil society groups and stakeholders. A new global, sign-on Statement by Civil Society Organizations on Urgent Action Needed for LGBTQ+ Rights will also be presented. CSOs are invited to add their voice.
The event will include an in-person panel at 10 am and press conference at 11:30; the event will be Live Streamed. An RSVP is required by Sat., Sept. 16th, noon, for in-person event. Note: space is limited; space is accessible. Venue details will be sent to RSVPs.
Please feel free to forward this invitation to those in your organization or networks who work in the areas of human rights, law, sexual and reproductive rights, health, gender, LGBTQ+ issues, and Africa and global affairs. We especially welcome CSOs and individuals working in these areas to join us, including UN and government delegates at the UNGA.
We welcome the media covering the UNGA and these topics to join us for a press conference with panelists. Media attendance by RSVP is required by Sat., Sept. 16th, noon.
The mounting attacks on LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda and elsewhere call us to urgent, informed action. We’re excited to facilitate this important dialogue and share information, strategies and resources, within and between frontline organizations.
