Post Election Statement

We at African Services Committee recognize that the results of the federal elections are understandably at the top of many of our minds, especially for those of you whose families and communities may be particularly impacted.

We were glad to hear our friends and supporters in the New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) reiterate several times in the last week that “New York City will continue to stand firmly by the values that have made it a thriving city of immigrants, where all residents—no matter their immigration status—should feel able to trust their local government and seek a better future for themselves and their families.” We echo that sentiment.

They went on to acknowledge that “our immigrant communities are facing heightened fear and uncertainty. It is important they know that New York City is fully committed to following our Sanctuary City laws. These laws clearly define the boundary between our role as a city government and federal immigration enforcement, protecting the privacy and identity of immigrant New Yorkers. This respect for privacy enables immigrant New Yorkers to access critical, often lifesaving, city services without fear.

We at African Services are committed both to bringing you information and support around these commitments from partner organizations like MOIA, who we will be inviting to address our members directly. We also encourage you to take care of your mental and emotional health and wellbeing in these stressful times. To learn more about the mental health counseling and support group services available from us at African Services please visit africanservices.org/health.
