African Services is the oldest and largest non-profit serving the African immigrant community in New York City. Established in 1981 by Ethiopian refugees, African Services was initially set up to provide comprehensive resettlement assistance to African refugees and asylum seekers.

Today, African Services provides health, housing, legal, educational and self-sufficiency services to African and Caribbean immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers affected by war, poverty, global health disparities, political oppression, and social persecution based on sexual orientation or HIV status.

Our programs are designed to meet the basic needs of newcomers, using health as a gateway to immigrant integration and supporting community members to live healthy and productive lives.

    Job Summary:

    Teaching collaboratively as part of African Services Committee’s English as a Second Language/Basic Literacy programs. 2 hours a week for a three month period.

    Responsibilities:

    • The ESOL Volunteer should be available once a week for two hours a class.

    • The ESOL volunteer will assist with administration of and placement assessment for all new students, and regular progress assessments for all enrolled students.

    • The ESOL volunteer must keep accurate records of attendance.

    • The ESOL Volunteer will assist in lesson planning for classes and special workshops.

    • The ESOL Volunteer should create a welcoming environment for a diverse group of students, at different English levels.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum level of education: Certified ESOL instructor, at least 2 years of ESOL/literacy teaching experience at low and intermediate levels.

    • Master’s degree and fluent in English written, speaking and reading skills.

    • Ability to communicate in French extremely helpful.
