Our Impact & How You Can Help

In 1981, Asfaha Hadera, an Ethiopian refugee, founded African Services in his basement apartment in the Bronx to help recent arrivals access services vital to their safety and well-being. Today, we are a multi-service human rights agency dedicated to assisting our community of New Yorkers from across the African Diaspora.

Our staff, who represent 15 countries and speak 20 languages, provide direct services, educational workshops, and trusted referrals, addressing the needs of newcomers affected by war, persecution, poverty, and other global health inequities. The demand for this work continues to grow in New York City, and your contributions can help us serve more clients.

Donations to ASC fund the day-to-day work of staff leading educational programs, running our testing center, keeping our pantry stocked, and providing social welfare support and referrals. You can help us both meet short-term stability needs and create long-term self-sufficiency.

Success Story:

Securing Legal Status

A client came to the United States with her three children after fleeing political persecution in Cameroon. Our legal staff helped her file an asylum application and secure her first interview. When a decision was not issued, our attorney followed up several times in the following years, until a second interview was scheduled. Finally, our client’s application was approved, granting her and her children asylee status.  After years of waiting, she received lawful status and can live without the fear of facing persecution again in her home country.
