For people affected by HIV, testing, treatment and care is not enough to help them move past their diagnosis and lead a full, productive life. Economic opportunity is essential for the continued well-being of individuals, their families and the broader community. Our Response: To ensure that our clients are not only surviving, but thriving, African Services launched a microenterprise initiative, an approach proven effective in poor communities around the world. Throughout the year, African Services clients have an opportunity to apply for $100 small business loans. With this initial capital and basic training in business skills, dozens of families have successfully launched their own small enterprises baking bread, growing vegetables, making butter and beeswax candles, and selling second-hand clothing in local markets. The chance to be productive and self-sufficient restores the dignity of families formerly unable to meet their most basic needs. As their health and productivity improve, parents can begin planning for a more promising future for themselves and greater opportunity for their children. |
