DISPLACED IN MEKELLE

African Services Committee Supports Internally Displaced People in Ethiopia's Tigray Region

Hadnet General Secondary School — now the May Woyni IDP Center — is one of 26 camps in Mekelle, Ethiopia where nearly 200,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) have resettled. Across Tigray, conflict has forced about 2 million people to flee their homes.

African Services Committee (ASC), through its health and community development center in Mekelle, assists the May Woyni IDP Center by delivering essential aid to the more than 7,000 IDPs in the camp. Since April 2021, ASC Ethiopia has provided cash for the Tigray Regional Health Bureau to meet the need of pharmaceuticals, mattresses, blankets, pillows, soap, and menstruation pads. Additionally, ASC Ethiopia dedicated staff to educate communities on best practices for hygiene in an effort to prevent the spread of disease. The agency also bolstered outreach to inform clients about ASC Ethiopia’s services for IDPs.

The most overwhelming challenges include the increasing number of IDPs in the region, uneasy transportation, and constraints on facilities and their budgets. Despite these challenges, ASC Ethiopia will continue to support IDPs in Mekelle — particularly at-risk groups, such as pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities.
