DEPARTMENT: Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS Program (HOPWA)

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for assessing Coordinated HOPWA program client eligibility, conducting intakes, service plans, data entry, developing housing placement referrals, administering emergency housing/utility and move-in subsidies.  

REPORTS TO: Director of Housing Placement



  • Distribute literature about Housing Program to prospective clients.
  • Administer Housing intake, assessment and service plan forms.
  • Develop relationships with public and private landlords and brokers, AIDS scattered site housing programs.
  • Document direct referrals of housing clients.
  • Assess client eligibility for emergency housing grants from African Services;  calculate allowances
  • Coordinate client services with Case Managers, Nutrition Program and Legal Department.
  • Determine balance needed from The Sustainable Living Fund/HAF program and assist client with application.
  • Disburse ASC housing assistance directly to landlord; and furnishing subsidies to vendor.
  • Client home visits/inspections
  • Provide quality assurance for active files.
  • Facilitate Monthly Housing Workshop.
  • Refer to Food Pantry and Nutrition Programs as needed.


Requirements: The Housing Placement Assistant must have at least one year of experience in the provision of housing services to people with AIDS.  Ideally, he or she will also have experience with immigrant AIDS services.  Minimum educational qualifications are B.S. with 5 years experience in HIV related social services and familiarity with City Housing Services and Providers. Spoken fluency in English and French is essential to the position. Basic computer skills required.
