Position: Senior Immigration Attorney (Halftime)

Department: Legal Department - IOLA Civil Legal Services Program

Reports to: Supervising Attorney

Overview

African Services Committee (ASC) is a New York City-based community services organization, whose mission is to improve the health and self-sufficiency of the African community through provision of direct health, housing, legal, and social services, advocacy, and policy work, benefiting African refugees and immigrants in New York City, as well as poor communities in Africa.  ASC’s legal department is a team of six attorneys, two fellows, three BIA representatives, and one paralegal.   The team provides direct civil legal representation in the areas of immigration, housing, family and benefits law.  

Basic Function of Position:

The halftime Senior Immigration Attorney will: provide effective legal representation to vulnerable African immigrants with a focus on youth, victims of gender-based violence, and persons fleeing persecution abroad, in immigration and related family law matters; provide substantive supervision and technical support to other legal staff providing immigration legal services; conduct community legal education presentations; refer clients to other legal services as appropriate; and comply with funder’s program and reporting requirements.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide intake and assessment of potential clients, with a focus on African youth, victims of gender-based violence, and persons fleeing persecution abroad;
  • Represent clients in a wide range of immigration matters, including asylum, VAWA, SIJS (and related family law matters), U visas, removal defense, family based petitions, adjustment of status, naturalization, etc;
  • Provide substantive supervision, including regular case reviews, to staff primarily engaged in immigration representation, currently including two staff attorneys, one fellow, two BIA representatives, and one paralegal;
  • Engage in community legal education efforts, including the planning and provision of trainings and presentations, drafting and development of education materials, and outreach to social service and community based organizations;
  • Refer clients who cannot be served at ASC to other trusted legal service providers as needed;
  • Comply with eligibility and reporting requirements of the IOLA Civil Legal Services Program;
  • Participate in case conferences and department meetings with supervisor and other staff in the legal department;
  • Collaborate with other ASC programs regarding mutual clients, to provide relevant updates and solicit case support.

 

Desired Qualifications

a. Education/Qualifications:

  •  Law degree and admission to the NYS bar

 

b. Prior Work Experience

  • Minimum 3 years experience providing direct immigration representation
  • Supervisory experience a plus

 

c. Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to cultural issues and social problems of African, Caribbean, and other refugees and immigrants
  • Excellent communication skills, spoken and written
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and record keeping skills, including the ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and to effectively interact with clients, colleagues, and management

 

d. Language Proficiency:

  • Bilingual, French/English or Spanish/English preferred

Consulting Fee:  $40,000 annually
